Milia Crete Greece Photography Workshop-3-30 copy

Milia is a little piece of heaven tucked away in the mountains of Greece, with delicious food (some of which is foraged from the mountain!) and beautiful scenery, and I was so excited to host a photography workshop there this past April. People from all over the world, including US, Canada, Switzerland, Finland, to name a few, joined me for my photography workshop in the beautiful Milia on Crete Island, Greece, and just learning their stories, hearing their perspectives, understanding their goals for their work inspired me like no Pinterest board can. Words cannot describe how thankful I was for this group of lovely friends during this workshop, and I still smile and giggle as I remember those late nights after lessons with copious amounts of wine, too much food, and lingering conversations.

A year ago, I taught a workshop in Gradara, Italy, where I met Eleni. We connected instantly and kept in touch, and suddenly we were planning a workshop in her home country, Greece. This is why I love doing these workshops. They can get overwhelming in the planning phase, and I have countless nightmares when I think something is going wrong or logistics were falling apart (ask me someday), but the reward lies in the real-life connections made with the people who come, this community that I have loved since I started blogging. A huge giant thanks to dear Eleni and Artemis for hosting, to Milia Mountain Retreat for their hospitality, to Constantina for the help, and big hugs to Jenny, the best assistant who honestly kept me sane :).

I still remember the nerves and angst when I hosted my first photography workshop (see the very first one here!), which were quickly relieved when I realized how wonderful the attendees were, how we could trust our months of planning, how naturally, conversation flows because we all nerd out about, say, mushroom foraging, or finding the right light, or unified sighs of delight as a poached egg is cracked, with the yolk oozing out satisfactorily for the perfect shot.  Read more »

A Foodie Weekend in Boston | bettysliu.comIt’s taken me three years to even consider putting together a “recommendations list”, because I dare not say “guide”. Even after three years in Boston, I feel like I wouldn’t be able to put a comprehensive guide to Boston’s food scene, because it’s that varied, innovative, and in flux. SO many new restaurants opened in just the past year, and there are more anticipating openings next year! Let’s just call this my favorite eats and treats in Boston, including the surrounding areas such as Somerville and Cambridge. This is not a comprehensive list at all, because there’s just so many restaurants and cafes I haven’t tried yet. Instead, this is my current list of recommendations – places to eat, drink coffee, snack on pastries, and my favorite gift shops for foodies.

I loosely categorized these based on the “type”- ie cafes, good meals, special occasion restaurants, seafood, etc… but please take these with a grain of salt! I’ve further divided them into Boston and Cambridge/Somerville – basically using the river as the dividing point. I rarely actually go across the river to Cambridge or Somerville, but the places I listed below are strong motivators to do so!

Mushroom Brown Rice Stuffed Butternut Squash | bettysliu.comBecause #virtualpumpkinparty was so epic, let’s extend it a bit shall we? Say, all fall? :). I can’t seem to resist the call of the seductive flesh of pumpkins and squashes. The shapes of the delicata, the sweetness of kabocha, the tenderness of acorn squash – I love the varieties and playing with them all. Just the other day I discovered that a local farmstand sold honey squash – little cute squashes that resembled mini butternut squash! I’m going this weekend to see if they have any left, because apparently they’re sweeter than butternut squash!!!

scallion pancake challah | bettysliu.com

Did you have a good, long weekend? I know a lot of people didn’t have Monday off, but I hope you had a lovely fall weekend regardless, wherever you are. I had a particularly packed but awesome weekend. We had downpour showers on Sunday but Sat + Monday were perfect, brisk autumnal temperatures. I had my first nap in awhile.  We photographed one of our last fall weddings and was treated, not to dry chicken as per vendor meals, but a real meal at the restaurant Mooo… (I love our clients!!). My dear twin sister and her boyfriend came to visit and stay with us, and we ate tons of bread, crudo, and drank coffee. I made this scallion pancake challah, had friends over for a meal, cried and screamed at the debates, and then ate ice cream sandwiches to cheer ourselves up. We’d just wrapped up our cardiology unit and after an exhausting exam, I was free! I practically danced my way home (stopped by WF for a kombucha), and reveled in my freedom. This was a much needed break, and now I’m ready for Hem/Onc and workshop!!!!! scallion pancake challah | bettysliu.com

Twist on Classic Swiss Fondue | bettysliu.comHappy National Cheese Fondue Day!!!!

What does fondue mean to you?? More broadly, what are your experiences with eating from a still-cooking pot of something? Growing up, we would almost always have hot pot for special occasions. A portable gas-powered burner with a large, divided pot would sit at the middle of the table, with anything from fresh vegetables to slices of raw lamb surrounding the pot – we’d wait for rich broth to come to a boil and then begin to cook the thin slices of meat. A few seconds in the pot, a slight shifting of your chopsticks, and a medium rare cooked piece of lab is ready for consumption. Then, two years ago when Alex and I visited Japan, we had sukiyaki, which is “Japanese-style hotpot”. First, lard is melted in a pot on the table, and then meat and vegetables are slowly cooked throughout the meal. What I loved about that was that right after a piece of meta is cooked, it is dipped into a bowl of beaten raw eggs and then consumed. It sounds weird, but it’s really delicious. And then there’s Korean barbecue. Do I even need to describe it?? What I loved about all of these, food-cooked-at-the-table dishes were how communal they were. A group of friend gathered at one table, reaching for a set of dishes spread in the center, cooking them in the same vessel. We have Chinese hot pot on special occasions because the atmosphere is celebratory – it becomes a huge spread because the options are endless, and the very nature of reaching over to cook things in a communal pot encourages communication and interaction. Of course, Japanese shabu-shabu, which is individual hot pots, are fun, too, but it’s not quite the communal experience like Chinese hot pot or Korean barbecue.

Oh, and on another note – I’m so glad you enjoyed my stop-motion vignette tutorial from last week! Keep tagging me, emailing me, DMing me to let me know you’ve tried it out – I LOVE seeing what you come up with. It’s much easier than you thought right?? Also, SLR Lounge very kindly wrote up a feature about it, and you can check it out here!!!

Icelandic Horses in Winter | bettysliu.com

On the flight to Iceland from Boston, our wonderfully humorous flight attendants “woke” us up and notified us of the presence of the famous, mystical northern lights – weak but sort of visible – but on the side of the plane we weren’t sitting on. Those on that side reared up like a wave, the unfortunate ones on the aisle seat craning their neck, so that even the appearance of the plane’s window was obliterated by staggered necks, hats, and hair. I could hear mutterings – the frustrations emanating out of the barely visible green streaks. I stayed in my seat, smiling to myself, letting that feeling of anticipation wash over me.
